The First-Timer’s Survival Guide: How to Crush Your First Tattoo Appointment

Misfits Tattoo First-Timer's Survival Guide First Tattoo Appointment

So, you’ve finally decided to pull the trigger. You’ve got the design in mind, you’ve picked the spot on your body, and now the butterflies are starting to kick in. Relax! Everyone at the shop was a "misfit" once, and we’ve got your back.

Getting inked is an adrenaline-pumping experience, but a little prep goes a long way. Here is your step-by-step roadmap to going from "nervous newbie" to "inked expert."

Step 1: The Night Before (Prep Like a Pro)

Your skin is a canvas—don't give your artist a difficult one to work with.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water. Hydrated skin takes ink much better than dry, flaky skin.

  • No Booze: Skip the celebratory shots until after the piece is done. Alcohol thins your blood, which leads to excess bleeding and can wash out the ink.

  • Sleep: Get a solid 8 hours. Your body needs energy to manage the endorphin rush.

Step 2: The Day Of (Fuel Your Body)

A tattoo is technically a "minor medical procedure." Treat it like one!

  • Eat a Big Meal: Low blood sugar is the #1 cause of fainting. Eat a carb-heavy meal an hour before you arrive.

  • Dress for Access: Wearing skinny jeans for a thigh tattoo is a rookie mistake. Wear loose, comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little ink on.

  • Pack a "Distraction Kit": If you’re settling in for a long session, time can crawl. Bring a charged iPad, a book, or your laptop to stay occupied.

  • Bring Fuel: Pack a lunch and some sugary snacks (like Gatorade or fruit). Keeping your glucose levels up helps your body manage the stress of the needle.

  • Shower: Your artist is going to be very close to you for a while. Be a pal—show up fresh!

Step 3: At the Shop (Communication is King)

Once you walk through our doors, the magic happens.

  • The "Plus One" Rule: We love the support, but please leave the whole family at home. Too many people at the station are distracting for the artist. You are welcome to bring one friend for moral support, but that’s the limit.

  • Entertain Your Guest: Remind your friend to bring a book or headphones, too—they’re going to get bored much faster than you will!

  • Speak Up: If the stencil looks 1cm too far to the left, say so! We want it to be perfect as much as you do.

  • Breathe: It sounds simple, but people tend to hold their breath when the needle touches down. Deep, steady breaths help manage the sting.

  • Don't Be a Hero: If you need a break to stretch or grab a water, just ask.

Step 4: The "Itchy" Phase (Aftercare Basics)

The tattoo doesn't end when you leave the chair.

  • Listen to Your Artist: We’ll give you specific instructions—follow them to the letter.

  • The "Red Zone" (Avoid These!): For at least 3 weeks, stay away from:

    • The Gym: Sweat and dirty gym equipment are a recipe for infection. Take a rest week; your muscles (and your art) will thank you.

    • Water Submersion: No swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, or long baths. Shorter, cool showers only!

    • No Tanning or Sun: UV rays are the enemy. Keep your tattoo out of the sun and stay out of tanning beds. A sunburn on a fresh tattoo is incredibly painful and will ruin the ink.

    • Saunas & Steam: Excessive heat and moisture will pull the ink right out.

    • Pets: We love furry friends, but keep them away from the fresh ink. Pet hair and dander are major irritants during the healing phase.

  • Post-Shower Protocol: Every time you step out of the shower, use a fresh, clean towel to pat the tattoo dry. Do not use the towel you've been using for three days; old towels harbor bacteria that love an open wound.

  • The Rule of Three (Moisturize!): Aim to moisturize your tattoo a minimum of 3 times a day. A good rule of thumb is to apply it whenever the skin feels tight, dry, or itchy.

    • Less is More: When applying moisturizer, use a very thin layer only. The skin needs to breathe to heal. If the tattoo looks "goopy" or shiny, you’ve put too much on. Dab off the excess with a clean paper towel.

  • Hands Off: It will itch. It might peel. Do not pick it. You’re literally pulling the ink out of your skin if you do.

  • Keep it Clean: Use unscented soap and a thin layer of recommended ointment/moisturizer.

The Grand Finale: You’ve Got This!

Look, we get it—sitting in a chair and getting poked by a needle for a few hours isn’t exactly a spa day. But neither is wearing a boring, blank arm for the rest of your life! Whether you’re nervous about the sting or worried you’ll accidentally bring your entire extended family (please don’t), just remember: we’ve seen it all, and we’re here to make sure you leave looking like a masterpiece.

By following this guide, you’re already ahead of 90% of the people out there. You’re hydrated, you’re fed, you’ve got your iPad charged, and you know exactly how to baby that new ink.
